Short Answer: Yes, It's Legitimate
If your browser showed a popup asking permission to access your location while using a school-managed device, that prompt is real and safe. It comes from Securly, RCS's web content filtering system. You can click Allow.
What Is Securly?
Securly is the web filtering platform used by Redlands Christian Schools to manage internet access on school-issued devices. It is installed as a browser extension on Chrome and Edge and is active on all RCS-managed laptops and Chromebooks.
Why Does Securly Ask for My Location?
Securly uses your device's location to determine whether you are on campus or off campus. This matters for two reasons:
- Policy enforcement: Different filtering rules can apply depending on whether you are on the school network or working remotely.
- Safety monitoring: If a flagged safety event occurs (such as a concerning search), Securly can include location data to help administrators respond quickly.
Granting location access is a one-time browser permission. Once you click Allow, the prompt will not appear again on that browser profile.
What If I'm Working from Home or Off Campus?
Staff and faculty are on the P1 – Staff Faculty Securly policy, which has off-campus filtering disabled. This means:
- The Securly extension will still be installed and active on your device.
- Web filtering does not apply when you are off the RCS campus network. You can browse normally at home without Securly blocking sites.
- Students remain filtered on and off campus — this policy applies to staff and faculty only.
What Should I Do When I See the Popup?
- Click Allow (or "Allow While Visiting the Site").
- The prompt will not appear again on that browser.
- No further action is needed.
If you accidentally clicked Block, you can reset the permission in your browser settings under Privacy and Security → Site Settings → Location. Contact IT if you need help resetting it.
Is My Location Being Tracked All the Time?
Securly uses location data only when a flagged event occurs or to determine on/off campus status. It is not a continuous GPS tracker. For full details on Securly's privacy practices, visit securly.com/privacy.
