Desktop PCs at RCS are typically laptops connected to a docking station with an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Here's how to troubleshoot common issues.
Keyboard or Mouse Not Responding
- Check the connection. Unplug the USB cable (or USB receiver for wireless peripherals) and plug it back in. Try a different USB port.
- For wireless keyboard/mouse: Replace the batteries or charge the device. Make sure the power switch is on.
- Restart the docking station: Unplug the docking station from power, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. This often resolves USB connectivity issues.
- Try the laptop directly. If the laptop's built-in keyboard and trackpad work but the external ones don't, the issue is likely the docking station or cables.
- If the problem keeps coming back, submit a ticket — you may need a docking station replacement.
External Monitor Not Displaying
- Check that the monitor is powered on (look for a power light).
- Check the cable connection between the monitor and the docking station (HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C).
- Press Windows + P and select Extend or Duplicate to ensure the display is detected.
- Try a different cable if available.
- Restart the docking station (unplug power, wait 10 seconds, replug).
BitLocker Recovery Screen
If you see a blue screen asking for a BitLocker recovery key when your PC starts up:
- Do not panic. This is a security feature, not a virus or crash.
- Do not try random passwords. Too many incorrect attempts can lock the drive further.
- Contact IT immediately at itsupport@redlandschristian.org. IT has the recovery keys for all RCS devices and can unlock it remotely or in person.
- Include your computer name (shown on the BitLocker screen) and your location in the ticket.
BitLocker triggers can include Windows updates, hardware changes, or BIOS settings. IT will help identify the cause and prevent recurrence.
When to Contact IT
- The laptop itself won't power on
- You see BitLocker or any other pre-boot error screen
- A docking station issue recurs after troubleshooting
- You need a hardware replacement (keyboard, mouse, monitor, charger)
Email itsupport@redlandschristian.org with your name, location, and a description of the issue.
