Getting a new phone? Don't wipe or trade in your old phone yet! Your work accounts and two-factor authentication (2FA) are tied to your current device. Follow these steps to avoid getting locked out.
Before You Switch Phones: Pre-Swap Checklist
Do these steps while you still have access to your old phone:
-
Enable cloud backup in Microsoft Authenticator:
- Open Microsoft Authenticator on your old phone.
- Tap the menu (three dots) > Settings.
- Turn on Cloud backup (iPhone: iCloud backup; Android: Google account backup).
-
Save your Google backup codes:
- Go to myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/two-step-verification.
- Under Backup codes, generate and print or write down your codes. Store them somewhere safe (not on your phone).
- Verify your recovery phone number is current in both Google and Microsoft account settings.
Step 1: Set Up Microsoft Authenticator on Your New Phone
- Install Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
- Sign in with the same personal Microsoft account or Apple/Google account used for cloud backup.
- Your work accounts should restore automatically from the backup.
- If accounts don't restore:
- Open Authenticator > tap + Add account > Work or school account.
- Sign in with your @redlandschristian.org email.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to re-register.

Step 2: Re-Enroll Google 2-Step Verification
- On your new phone, go to myaccount.google.com/signinoptions/two-step-verification and sign in with your @acarcs.org account.
- Under Google prompts, your new phone should appear if you're signed into your Google account on it. Tap it to verify.
- If prompted for verification and you can't receive it, use one of your backup codes to get in.
- Once signed in, remove your old phone from the trusted devices list and confirm your new phone is registered.
