If you're seeing an "account locked," "too many failed attempts," or "access blocked" error, this article explains why it happens and how to get back in quickly.
Why Does My Account Get Locked?
Accounts lock automatically after several failed password attempts as a security measure. This can happen when:
- You've forgotten your password and tried multiple times
- Your phone or computer is trying to sign in with an old, saved password
- You recently changed your password but haven't updated it everywhere
- Caps Lock was on when you typed your password
Fix: Office 365 / Outlook Account Locked
- Visit passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.
- Enter your RCS email address (yourname@redlandschristian.org) and complete the CAPTCHA.
- Choose a verification method: email or authenticator app.
- Follow the prompts to reset your password.
- Once reset, update your password in Outlook on all your devices (phone, laptop, tablet).
⚠️ Important: After resetting, check your phone's mail app and any saved passwords in your browser — outdated passwords on connected devices can re-lock your account within minutes.
Fix: Google / Gmail Account Locked (@acarcs.org)
- Go to accounts.google.com/signin/recovery.
- Enter your @acarcs.org email address.
- Follow the account recovery prompts.
- If recovery options aren't available, contact IT — student and staff Google accounts are managed by RCS and can be unlocked by IT directly.
Fix: Windows Computer Login Locked
If you're locked out of your Windows computer at school:
- Wait 15–30 minutes — Windows accounts often unlock automatically after a timeout period.
- Try logging in with your correct password once the lockout clears.
- If the account doesn't unlock, contact IT — Windows domain accounts require IT to unlock remotely or in person.
Prevent Getting Locked Out Again
- Update saved passwords on your phone, browser, and mail apps immediately after any password change.
- Turn off Caps Lock before typing your password.
- Set up the Microsoft Authenticator app as a backup verification method so you can always reset your own Office 365 password without IT.
