If you pick up your desk phone and hear nothing — no dial tone, no sound at all — use these steps to diagnose and resolve the issue before contacting IT.
Step 1: Check the Physical Connections
- Make sure the handset cord (the coiled cord connecting the handset to the phone base) is firmly plugged into both ends.
- Check the line cord (flat cord from the phone to the wall jack) — press firmly at both ends to ensure a solid connection.
- If the phone has a network/ethernet cable (most Intermedia VOIP phones do), confirm it's firmly seated in the back of the phone and in the wall jack or network switch.
Step 2: Restart the Phone
- Unplug the ethernet/network cable from the back of the phone.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait 1–2 minutes for the phone to fully reboot and register with the phone system.
- Pick up the handset and check for a dial tone.
Step 3: Check the Phone Display
- If the phone screen is blank or dark: the phone may not be receiving power. If it's a PoE (Power over Ethernet) phone, the network switch may have lost power or the port may be disabled — contact IT.
- If the screen shows "No Service," "Unregistered," or "Connecting": the phone has lost its connection to the Intermedia phone system. A reboot usually resolves this, but if the message persists after 5 minutes, contact IT.
- If the screen looks normal but there's still no dial tone: try pressing the speakerphone button to test audio through the speaker rather than the handset.
Step 4: Test the Handset
If the speaker works (you hear a tone through speakerphone) but the handset is silent, the handset itself may be faulty. Try a different handset cord if one is available, or report the issue to IT for a replacement.
Contact IT
If the phone still has no dial tone after the steps above, submit a ticket so IT can investigate — the issue may be with the network port, the PoE switch, or the phone's registration on the Intermedia system:
