Streaming video on a Promethean panel can be a great teaching tool, but it's also one of the most common sources of lag, audio issues, and buffering. This guide covers best practices and common fixes.
Best Practices for Smooth Streaming
Use the Panel's Built-in Browser
Open YouTube, Vimeo, or your streaming platform directly in Chrome on the panel rather than mirroring from a laptop. This is more stable and uses less bandwidth than screen mirroring a video.
Set Video Quality to 720p
The Promethean panel doesn't benefit from 1080p or 4K video, but lower resolutions reduce buffering significantly on school Wi-Fi.
- While the video is playing, click the gear/settings icon on the video player.
- Select Quality > 720p (or 480p if still buffering).
Minimize Other Activity During Streaming
- Close other browser tabs and apps on the panel before streaming.
- Avoid screen mirroring from another device at the same time as streaming.
- If students are on devices, heavy class-wide internet use can slow the panel's stream — consider a brief pause.
Common Streaming Problems and Fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Video buffers constantly | Lower video quality to 720p or 480p; close other tabs; check Wi-Fi connection |
| No audio on video | Check panel volume; ensure audio output is set to panel speakers; see Promethean Panel: How to Fix Audio |
| Video plays but is very laggy | Restart the panel; clear Chrome cache; try a different browser tab |
| YouTube says "Video unavailable" | May be filtered by GoGuardian/Securly — contact IT to request an override for educational content |
| Screen goes black during video | Tap the screen to disable screensaver; go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and increase the timeout length |
| Video works but students can't hear it | Check if room speakers are connected and selected as the audio output; see Promethean Panel: How to Fix Audio |
Blocked Video Content
Some video sites or specific videos may be blocked by the school's content filter (Securly or GoGuardian). If a video is blocked that you need for instruction:
- Submit a ticket at acarcs.zendesk.com.
- Include the URL of the video and a brief description of how it's being used.
- IT can grant a temporary or permanent override for approved educational content.
Mirroring Video from a Laptop vs. Streaming Directly
| Stream Directly on Panel | Mirror from Laptop | |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | Better (no mirroring overhead) | Depends on mirroring method |
| Audio | Panel speakers directly | Laptop audio through HDMI or wireless |
| Ease | Requires signing in on panel | Easy if already on laptop |
| Best for | Long video clips, class films | Quick demos, showing documents |
