May 4, 2026 · Your weekly byte-sized IT update from Eagle Byte

Hi, I'm Eagle Byte! 🦅 Coming in hot from the Zendesk queue, where this week's greatest hits included
"Internet down," "urgent: laptop overheating and can't turn it off,"
and my personal favorite, "phones not working in 4A and 4C."
Steve and the IT crew put this newsletter together each week, and they let me tag along for
a byte-sized (get it?) look at everything happening in IT at RCS.

🌷 Holland Fest 2026 — IT Behind the Scenes
The 73rd Annual Holland Festival came to life on May 2, 2026 - Klompen dancers, Ollie Bollen lines stretching around the block, class baskets, pony rides, live and silent auctions, and a full day of community celebrating the Dutch heritage at the heart of this school. If you were there, you know: Holland Fest is a big deal.
What you might not have seen was IT's role in making it run. This year, the IT team partnered with David Best in the Business Office to deploy 15 iPads configured for tap-to-pay across the event - giving booths, the auction, and merchandise stands a fast, modern way to accept payments. No cash-only bottlenecks. No fumbled card readers. Just a quick tap and a receipt. By all accounts, it was a hit.
And none of that happens without the people who own the event from start to finish. A genuine thank-you to Ginger and Shannon in the Development Office, who worked tirelessly to make Holland Fest everything it was this year. The IT team was glad to be part of it.

A big thank-you to Robin Clark for holding down the repair queue and knocking out Chromebook fixes, phone issues, clock resets, and Surface Pro support calls - often all in the same morning. Robin also supported the Holland Festival tech setup, which is no small thing when the whole school is watching.
And if you've submitted a ticket in the last two weeks and someone new helped you out - that's Trent Stone, who just joined the IT team. He's learning the ropes fast and already contributing. Welcome to the nest, Trent.

📚 Byte's 30-Second Classroom
Quick question: when you're rushing to finish grades and 47 things need to happen before the bell, how carefully do you read your email? If the answer is "not very," you're in good company - and that's exactly what phishing attackers count on.
This week, several sharp-eyed staff members caught suspicious emails and reported them to IT right away. That's the whole playbook. Here's Byte's 30-second version of what to look for before you click:
|
⚠️ Red Flag #1 - Urgency + Fear: "Your account will be locked in 24 hours." Real IT messages don't threaten you.
⚠️ Red Flag #2 - Weird sender address: The name might look right, but hover over it. If the actual email address looks wrong, it is.
⚠️ Red Flag #3 - Credential requests: IT will never ask for your password by email. Neither will Microsoft. Neither will Google. Ever.

🎥 The Shameless Plug
A shameless plug from Byte - but honestly, with end-of-year brain fog setting in, this one is worth 6 minutes of your life. It covers the 7 red flags that tell you an email is trying to steal your credentials, before you click anything. 🦅

🖥 On Byte's Radar
Here's what IT has on deck for the week ahead:
|
•
Securly web filter - Phase 2 coming: We're deploying the SmartDNS component for the Securly Suite rollout. This is the piece that makes web filtering work reliably on all campuses. More details as we get closer.
|
|
•
End-of-year device check: As the year winds down, keep an eye out for a Chromebook and device return reminder from IT. If a device needs a repair before summer, sooner is always better.
|
|
•
Summer 2026 tech refresh planning: Behind the scenes, the IT team is deep in planning for summer upgrades across all campuses. Details to come - but it's going to be a productive summer.
