If your Chromebook won't turn on, won't charge, or is showing a black screen, try these steps before submitting a ticket — most charging issues can be resolved without IT help.
Chromebook Won't Charge
- Check the charger connection — make sure the charger is firmly plugged into both the Chromebook and the wall outlet.
- Try a different outlet — the outlet may be the issue, not the charger.
- Check the charging port — look for any debris, lint, or damage in the charging port. Gently blow it out if needed.
- Try a different charger — if a compatible charger is available, test whether the Chromebook charges with it.
- Look for the charging indicator — when plugged in, a light near the port or on the screen should appear. If no light appears after 10 minutes, the charger or port may be faulty.
If none of the above work, the charger or charging port may need to be replaced. See How to Report a Damaged or Broken Chromebook.
Chromebook Won't Turn On
- Plug it in first — the battery may simply be fully drained. Charge it for at least 15–30 minutes before trying to power it on.
- Hold the power button for 3–5 seconds to perform a hard reboot.
- Perform a hard reset — hold Refresh (↻) + Power at the same time for 3 seconds. This resets the hardware without erasing your data.
- Check for the battery indicator — when plugged in after being fully dead, a battery icon should appear on screen after a minute or two.
Screen Is Black But Chromebook Seems On
- Increase the brightness using the brightness-up key on the keyboard.
- Press Power once to wake the display from sleep.
- Try closing and reopening the lid.
- If the Chromebook is casting or connected to a panel, press Ctrl + F4 to cycle display modes.
