If your Chromebook camera isn't working or shows an error, it may have been disabled by IT through device management policy. This article explains when and why this happens, and what to do.
Why Is the Camera Disabled?
RCS manages all school-issued Chromebooks through Google Admin (JAMF/MDM). Camera access can be restricted at the device or organizational unit level for the following reasons:
- Policy enforcement — cameras may be disabled for certain grade levels or during specific testing periods
- Security or privacy requirements — particularly for younger students
- Accidental misconfiguration — a policy change may have unintentionally disabled cameras for a group
How to Tell If It's a Policy Restriction vs. Hardware Issue
| Symptom | Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| Camera app opens but shows a black screen | May be hardware or driver issue |
| "Camera is blocked" or permission denied message | Policy or browser permission restriction |
| Camera worked before, now it doesn't — nothing else changed | Likely a policy update — contact IT |
| Camera works on some sites but not others | Browser/site permission — see steps below |
Quick Fix: Check Browser Camera Permissions
- In Chrome, click the lock icon in the address bar.
- Look for Camera — make sure it's set to Allow, not Block.
- If it's blocked, change it to Allow and reload the page.
If the Camera Is Disabled by IT Policy
You cannot re-enable a camera that has been restricted through device management — this requires IT to adjust the policy. If you believe the camera needs to be enabled for a legitimate educational reason (e.g., video project, virtual field trip):
- Submit a ticket at acarcs.zendesk.com.
- Include: your name, device asset tag, the specific use case, and the date/time it's needed.
- IT or your department head will review and enable access if appropriate.
