Overview
Keeping your Chromebook updated ensures you have the latest security patches and performance improvements. Chrome OS updates automatically in the background, but you can also check for and install updates manually.
Check for and Install Updates
- Log in to the Chromebook.
- Click the Clock icon in the bottom-right corner to open the system tray, then click the Settings gear icon.
- In the search bar at the top of Settings, type Update and select Check for updates (Chrome OS).
- If an update is available, it will download and install automatically.
- Restart your Chromebook to complete the update when prompted.
After the Update
Students should also check that any extensions or apps they use are running on the latest version. In the Chrome browser, go to chrome://extensions and enable Developer Mode to see version info, or simply remove and reinstall extensions if behavior seems off after an update.
Troubleshooting
- No updates available but you expect one? The device may be managed by IT — updates are rolled out in waves. If urgently needed, submit an IT ticket.
- Update fails or gets stuck? Restart the Chromebook and try again. If it persists, contact IT.
