Paper jams are one of the most common copier issues and are usually something you can fix yourself in a few minutes. This guide covers clearing jams on the Toshiba MFPs and other copiers on campus.
Before You Start
- Do not force or tear paper — torn paper can leave fragments inside that cause more jams.
- Turn off the machine if the jam is severe or the paper is deep inside the machine.
- The copier display will show a jam location diagram — follow it; it's usually accurate.
Step 1: Read the Copier Display
The screen will show a diagram highlighting exactly where the jam is located (e.g., "Door A," "Tray 2," "Fuser area"). Note the location before opening anything.
Step 2: Open the Indicated Door or Tray
Common jam locations:
- Paper tray — pull the tray all the way out, remove any crumpled paper, and reinsert the tray.
- Front door (Door A/B) — press the release button and open the front panel. Pull the jammed paper out slowly and firmly toward you — do not pull against the paper path direction.
- Duplex/back door — open the rear panel and remove any paper. This area often holds partial sheets from double-sided print jobs.
- ADF (document feeder) — lift the feeder cover, remove the jammed original document, and reload.
Step 3: Remove All Jammed Paper
- Gently pull the jammed paper in the direction of the paper path (usually toward you or toward the output tray).
- Check for any small torn pieces — even small scraps can cause the next jam.
- Close all doors and trays firmly.
Step 4: Resume Printing
- The copier should automatically clear the jam error once all doors are properly closed.
- If the error persists, turn the machine off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Resend the print job — jammed jobs are usually cancelled automatically and will need to be re-sent.
Recurring Jams in the Same Location?
If the same tray keeps jamming, the paper may be:
- Loaded incorrectly (paper must be fanned before loading and aligned to the guides)
- Damp or wrinkled (use fresh paper from an unopened ream)
- The wrong paper size for the tray setting
If jams continue after checking these, contact IT — the feed rollers may need cleaning or replacement.
