A Surface Pro Type Cover that stops typing is almost always a connection issue, not a broken keyboard. Try these four fixes in order. Most teachers are back up and running before they finish step three.
Overview
This article helps Redlands Christian School staff get an unresponsive Microsoft Surface Pro Type Cover keyboard working again. It covers the four most common fixes, when to ask IT for a replacement Type Cover, and what information to include in a ticket if you need help.
Steps
1. Detach and Reattach the Type Cover
- Pull the Type Cover straight down off the bottom of the screen. You will feel the magnets release.
- Wait three seconds, then re-seat the cover. Listen for the click and watch for the keyboard backlight to flash on.
- Try typing. If it works, you are done.
2. Wipe the Magnetic Connector
- Detach the Type Cover again.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the gold connector strip on the keyboard and the matching connector on the Surface.
- Reattach the cover and test typing.
3. Restart Your Surface (Fully)
- Closing the lid is not enough. Click the Start menu, then Power, then Restart.
- Wait for the device to come back to the lock screen.
- Sign in and test the keyboard.
4. Run Windows Update and Reboot Again
- Open Settings, then Windows Update, then Check for updates.
- Install anything that appears. Surface firmware updates often ship through Windows Update and fix Type Cover detection issues.
- Reboot a second time after updates finish.
Troubleshooting
Only some keys work and the rest are dead.
This points to hardware damage in the Type Cover. Submit a help desk ticket so IT can issue a replacement.
The keyboard works in the BIOS or on the sign-in screen but stops after sign-in.
A driver is misbehaving. Open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right-click "Surface Type Cover", and choose Uninstall device. Restart and Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.
The Type Cover is not detected at all, even after a full restart.
Try a different Type Cover from IT if one is available. If a known-good cover works, your cover needs replacement. If neither works, the Surface itself may need service.
You see a BitLocker recovery screen after the reboot.
Do not guess at the recovery key. Contact IT immediately at help@redlandschristian.org with your computer name shown on the screen. IT has the recovery keys for all RCS devices.
