If a website you need for a lesson is blocked by Securly, you can temporarily whitelist it for your students during class using Securly Classroom. This article walks you through the process.
Before You Start: What Securly Classroom Can and Can't Do
Securly Classroom lets teachers manage student browsing in real time during an active class session. You can:
- Temporarily allow a specific website for your students during your class period
- Lock student screens to keep students focused
- View student screens to monitor activity
You cannot use Securly Classroom to permanently unblock a site. If you need a permanent unblock, submit a request to IT (see "Need a Permanent Unblock?" below).
Step 1: Open Securly Classroom
- Go to classroom.securly.com and log in with your RCS Google account.
- Select your active class. Securly Classroom syncs with your roster, so your students should appear automatically.
⚠️ Note: If your class roster looks incorrect or shows students from a different period, this may be a FACTS sync issue. Contact IT so we can investigate.
Step 2: Whitelist the Website
- In your active Securly Classroom session, click the "Allow" or "Unlock Site" option.
- Enter the full URL of the website you want to allow (e.g.,
https://www.wheelofnames.com). - The site will be temporarily accessible for all students in your active class session.
This override lasts only for the duration of your class session. Once the session ends, the site reverts to its default filtering status.
Step 3: Verify Student Access
After whitelisting the site:
- Ask a student to refresh the page or re-enter the URL.
- The site should load normally. If it's still blocked, double-check that:
- The URL you entered matches exactly (including
https://) - Your Securly Classroom session is active
- The student is on a school-managed device and signed into their RCS account
- The URL you entered matches exactly (including
What Types of Websites Can Be Whitelisted?
Usually approved for temporary classroom use:
- Educational resources (Khan Academy, Desmos, research databases)
- Classroom activity tools (Wheel of Names, Kahoot, Quizlet)
- News and current events sites for class discussions
- Subject-specific reference sites
Cannot be whitelisted — even temporarily:
- Gaming and gambling sites
- Social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat)
- Anonymous proxy or VPN services
- Adult content
- Malware or phishing sites
⚠️ Important: Requests to unblock games, social media, or entertainment sites for student recreational use will not be approved. Content filtering is in place to keep students safe and focused during the school day.
Need a Permanent Unblock?
If you use a site regularly for your curriculum and don't want to whitelist it every class period:
- Email itsupport@redlandschristian.org with:
- The full website URL
- Your name and campus
- The class or subject it's used for
- A brief explanation of the educational purpose
- Whether it's needed temporarily or permanently
- IT will review the site and, if approved, add it to the campus-level whitelist so students can access it without you needing to allow it each time.

Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to Try |
|---|---|
| Securly Classroom won't load | Make sure you're signed in with your RCS Google account, not a personal account |
| My class roster is wrong | This may be a FACTS enrollment sync issue — contact IT |
| Site is still blocked after whitelisting | Verify the full URL matches and your session is active; try refreshing the student's browser |
| One student is blocked but others aren't | The student may be on a different org unit or filtering policy — submit a ticket to IT with the student's name and the site URL |
